SINGAPORE: Two new platforms will open at Choa Chu Kang Light Rail Transit (LRT) station to help ease congestion at the existing platform, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Friday.
The new platforms will allow for designated areas for boarding and alighting. Commuters arriving at the station will alight at the new platforms before the doors that face the existing platform open for boarding passengers. Each of the new platforms will also have a dedicated staircase and escalator. This will benefit nearby residents such as those from Sol Acres and Inz Residence. Upcoming executive condo launches include Anchorvale Lane EC, Rivercove EC while existing ones include Parc Life, Signature at Yishun, Brownstone EC, Visionaire EC, Inz Residence, The Criterion EC and Northwave EC, The Terrace EC, The Vales EC, Hundred Palms Residences EC, Sol Acres EC and The Bellewoods EC. Rivercove Residences floor plans and Rivercove Residences EC details will be available shortly.
Built at a cost of S$12 million, the platforms are part of improvement works first announced in 2012 and completed on Oct 31 this year.
New fare gates were installed at the LRT station, as well as the connecting MRT station. LTA said these new fare gates will improve connectivity to the bus interchange and shopping mall.
A transfer staircase from the LRT to the MRT station platform has also been widened to ease congestion, and two high-volume low-speed fans installed at the existing station platform to cool the air.
According to LTA, the construction of the additional two platforms posed a major challenge, as the team had to work within the constraints of limited time and space.
The new platforms had to be built between the MRT and LRT tracks, with a width clearance of only 4 metres.
Detailed planning, sequencing and team work were key to completing the project safely and on time, the authority said.
