The new faces of public housing

SINGAPORE: Customisable units with distinct green features – housing projects like SkyVille@Dawson and Punggol Waterway Ridges are the new faces of public housing.

The Terrace EC is by the Punggol Waterway. Recent executive condo launches include Treasure Crest and Northwave EC while existing ones include The Terrace EC, Brownstone EC, The Vales EC, Parc Life EC , Sol Acres EC, The Visionaire EC,  Bellewoods EC, Signature at Yishun, The Criterion EC, Waterwoods EC, Skypark Residences, Wandervale EC, The Amore EC, Bellewaters EC.

This was further established after both developments were declared winners of the 2016 Housing and Development Board (HDB) Design Awards on Tuesday to recognise industry partners for creating quality homes for Singaporeans.

A total of 11 HDB Design Awards and 12 HDB Construction Awards were also awarded, and the other winners include Joo Seng Green, Waterway Sunbeam and the upcoming projects Alkaff CourtView and Alkaff LakeView.

SkyVille@Dawson by WOHA Architects was based on the design concept of 12 “Sky Villages”, with each unit designed to be part of a cluster of 80 homes in each “Village” that shares a naturally-ventilated Sky Garden. The Sky Gardens are complemented by a roof garden on the 47th floor equipped with a 400-metre jogging track and seating areas, providing social spaces for residents to mingle.

The other HDB Design Award winner, Punggol Waterway Ridges, was conceptualised by Surbana Jurong Consultants and leverages on its proximity to My Waterway@Punggol for its design.

Beyond the new housing projects, the HDB Design Award also recognises design excellence in the rejuvenation of older estates. A new category has been introduced this year to such projects under the Remaking Our Heartland programme.

HDB said recognising these innovative designs pave the way for more similar projects in the future.

“The Awards are important for the public to understand what good design constitutes and to ensure high standards are kept year after year,” said one of the jury panellists and Designer of the Year for the President’s Design Awards 2013, Yip Yuen Hong.
