SINGAPORE: Two new LRT train cars arrived at the Sengkang-Punggol LRT depot on Wednesday (Nov 25). They are capable of operating in a two-car train system, increasing passenger capacity per train.
The train cars arrived in Singapore from Mihara, Japan this week and were delivered to Sengkang-Punggol LRT Depot for tests to commence. They join the existing fleet of 41 train cars at the depot, 16 of which have been modified to operate in pairs. The rest will remain unmodified.
After the completion of this increase by early 2017, the fleet size of the Sengkang-Punggol LRT will increase by 40 per cent. This will benefit the nearby executive condo residents such as those from The Terrace EC, Amore EC , Bellewaters EC, The Vales EC and Waterwoods EC.
Testing of the modified trains for two-car operations on the Sengkang tracks commenced in October this year.
Another 14 new train cars will be added to the line’s fleet, bringing it up to 57. These trains will enter service on the Sengkang LRT line by the first quarter of 2016.
The signalling system for the Punggol LRT is also being upgraded to enable two-car operations by the first quarter of 2017.
